About Derrick:
Derrick taught History and Citizenship in Barnstaple, which encouraged him to get involved in the community.
"The biggest reward was meeting my wife Liz!" says Derrick. "I served 12 years as your County Councillor, Highways & Transportation Chair, including 12 years on the Environment Agency – Flooding & Environment.
I have always been passionate about the environment. Elected to North Devon District Council in 1991. The Prime Directive was and is to get the best for Braunton.
Delighted to have been re-elected to North Devon Council in May 2019. Currently I am Chair of Policy Development which includes the scrutiny aspect of the Council. Very pleased to be on the Climate Action Team as I am passionate in preserving our beautiful environment.
Since being re-elected, our election promise of an Air Quality Supplementary Planning Document for Braunton, to mitigate and fight the issues of pollution, has been adopted by the Council. This forms part of the Local Development Plan and is now a material consideration in all planning applications. I am told we were one of the first Councils in the country to achieve this!
Also very pleased that what is known as Bats Meadow has been transferred to Braunton Parish along with the promised land from Tesco as part of the planning conditions.
Very pleased that the Braunton Neighbourhood Plan is now very near to completion”
